Godfrey ends Day 1 of draft as Kiper’s top player available
Ten cornerbacks were taken on Day 1 of the NFL Draft on Saturday — Iowa’s Charles Godfrey wasn’t one of them.
If it’s any consolation, he did end the day as the top player available, according to draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.
“In the third round, Charles Godfrey is going to be a real good pick for somebody coming out of that Iowa Hawkeye program,” Kiper said on ESPN. “He can play corner or safety. He played safety early in his career.”
Three of the final four picks in the second round were cornerbacks, all players Kiper had rated lower than Godfrey coming into the weekend. Godfrey is expected to be one of the first players selected when the draft resumes with Rounds 3 through 7 on Sunday.
Godfrey, a 6-foot, 207-pounder who made the switch from safety to corner after his sophomore season at Iowa, was a second-team All-Big Ten pick as a senior last fall, when he led the Hawkeyes and ranked third in the conference with five interceptions. Godfrey also led Iowa with nine pass breakups and ranked fifth on the team with 65 tackles, including 42 solo stops.
